Restoration Project
Missing and cracked tiles were lifted and discarded with original or reproduction tiles replaced and reset at the correct level.
The area was stripped and cleaned to remove ingrained dirt and residue.
The area was sealed and a wax finish applied.
Restoration to listed building
Repair, clean and restoration of period tiles in a listed building.
Two areas had been damaged due to extension works, these needed careful repair and a small area of the design extending.
Missing and cracked tiles were discarded, and salvaged originals or modern reproductions used as replacements.
The whole area was re-grouted and had a deep clean, seal and wax.
Victorian floor tiles
This entire floor has been reinstated
Our client presented us with the original salvaged tiles that he had recovered. After cleaning and sorting, missing component tiles were created, including the decorative encaustics. The tiles, once installed in their original configuration, were then grouted and cleaned to finish.
Victorian tiled floors such as this can be boosted in area or repaired with matching colours and encaustics.

The salvaged tiles - It is always recommended that original tiles are salvaged where possible. Even if the floor is lifted in sections, the tiles can still be separated from the mortar to which they were originally fixed and re-used.
Starting point - Having planned the layout the tiles are fixed with a suitable adhesive compatible with the ply base.
Building the design - The area extends as the tiles are carefully fixed.
The completed installation - The tiles once installed are grouted, cleaned and sealed to finish.
Example of how a threshold is treated - A complimentary design configuration is always placed within a threshold where appropriate.

Mosaic new build
Marble mosaic installation
High specification new build for a prestigious client and architect.
The marble tessere measure 15mm x 15mm.
The design was assembled onto sheets prior to installation at our workshop.
Installation time approximately 3 weeks.
Area - 19 sq meters

Wembley Arena - Salvaged Tiles
Tile salvage and display.
We were approached by the team at Wembley stadium to salvage three sections of period tiling from the now demolished Palace of Arts.
The building featured as part of the British Empire Exhibition (1924 - 1925) and housed ecclesiastical arts and crafts of the period.
The mosaic floor was lifted and mounted onto a light weigh board framed.
Here we see the finished wall mounted piece.
The glass wall tiles were produced by the famous Whitefriars glass company. These were also carefully extracted and mounted and framed.
These pieces are now housed in the restaurant at the recently refurbished Wembley Arena.

Special restoration services
Project Mural repair
Client: Queen Mary University.
Brief: To repair and reinstate missing tiles to the glazed tile mural located in the engineering block of the University.
An image was provided as the only record of the missing area.
London Mosaic undertook a survey and removed any loose material leaving the area secure whilst missing tiles were commissioned.
Using a combination of the historical image and data gathered from the survey we created a diagram of the missing area. Using this diagram and original tiles for colour samples we were able to create suitable matching replacements.
These were then installed creating a seamless finish.
The entire area was cleaned and other minor repairs were undertaken to improve the overall appearance.
